My husband and I love to drive together; it’s something we have had to do a bit less of since having children but they are now to an age where we can start to enjoy the time behind the wheel again. This past weekend we took a road trip for Orange County to Las Vegas for the I Heart Radio Music Festival with Mazda and were able to experience the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata.
Come and take a closer look at the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata and all of its features.
The MX-5 appeals to both men and women with the sleek edges and husky build and it turns a lot of heads when people see it. We received many second looks while driving it; the rear of the car calls attention and left many asking what kind of car we were driving. Honestly, the best story I can share about the beauty of the car comes from our daughter, who has a knack for finding beautiful things and has a fondness for cars like my husband and I and her brother.
I surprised her by picking her up from school in the new 2016 Mazda MX-5; as we walked up toward the parking lot, the Miata shined among the other cars. She got my attention to tell me how beautiful that car was as she pointed to the MX-5. With a quick click of the key hidden in my hands, the trunk opened. Her eyes widened as I told her to toss her backpack in and hop in the front seat (where she has never sat). Then when she hopped in, I pulled back the soft top.
The smiles on her face are something I will never forget; it reminded me of my smiles when I drove my brand new teal Mazda MX-3 off the lot when I was 17. She drove with her hands up like she was on a roller coaster while we took the car for a spin and said, “Mama, I feel so rich in this car.”
We drove the Grand Touring model of the Mazda MX-5 that features leather seats and Bose speakers in the headrests. Loaded with technology and all of the convenience we need to stay connected to the world around us, the MX-5 Grand Touring surrounded us in luxury and sport – something I like to refer to as sporty spice. XM Radio, Navigation, an enhanced sound system and more can all be enjoyed on the model we drove. MAZDA CONNECT brings all of your social media, music and navigation to life which is all accessible via the master control knob on the center console. We did find the natural reach for this to be just a bit off from our normal comfort level, but once accessed controlling is easy and matches what one would expect.
The Mazda MX-5 grips the road and provides a secure footprint for a stable ride with the aluminum-alloy block and cylinder head that makes the engine lighter while still providing torque and power. Mazda actually reduced the weight of the 2016 MX-5 as a whole by about 145 pounds which provides a much appreciated increase in torque and feeling of control behind the wheel. The Mazda MX-5 is a good example of smart design with intention; the changes that were made in the 2016 design were done with clear purpose that the driver can feel at point in their drive.
Gas mileage is a positive as well on the MX-5; the Grand Touring convertible with automatic transmission gets 27 mpg in the city and 36 on the highway. We took the scenic route on the way to Las Vegas and drove the 2016 Mazda MX-5 through the mountains and honestly, this is where the connection between the driver and car happened. Feeling the control behind the wheel and how responsive the MX-5 was to the driver allowed the true car and driver relationship to deepen.
Space and Storage
So we are talking sports car here, which lets you know that space is not the primary focus of the vehicle design. That being said, my husband and I were able to fit everything we needed for our four day trip to Las Vegas; and packing for Vegas is a bit different than the typical getaway because every woman needs a few changes of clothes to go from day to night and shoes to match each outfit. We fit everything perfectly in the Miata trunk but would definitely recommend a travel tip of packing in smaller bags so you can utilize the trunk design efficiently.
Storage throughout the interior of the car is minimal but functional given the purpose of the car and driving experience. After all, one isn’t packing up the MX-5 to head to the beach with boogie boards and snacks for the day. The glove box is located just behind the seats between the driver and passenger; we were able to comfortably fit my visor, sunblock and a few other small items in it. Additionally, with a few changes to the interior, the MX-5 offers more space in 2016 than it has before. Shifting the seat a bit lower and with a slight recline means a bit more headroom and space to stretch out the legs. The cup holder for the passenger offers flexibility as well with a removable design that can be used between the driver and passenger or to the left of the passenger’s legs. Changes like this are smart and allow people to customize their comfort which is always a good thing.
The 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata starts under $25,000 as a base price; the MX-5 Grand Touring with manual transmission starts at just over $30,000. Regardless of which model you go with, the Mazda Miata offers a refreshed look while maintaining the tradition that Miata owners have come to love over the years.
For my husband and I, our road trip from Southern California to Las Vegas would not have been the same without behind the wheel of the Mazda MX-5. It offered the carefree feeling we needed for a weekend away with the fun and zip that we crave on our drives.
