This is one of those times when playing with your food is highly encouraged. Make these chalkboard cookies with edible chalk to express your feelings on any holiday. They make the perfect teacher gift for your child, too! This is one of those baking projects that is SO much fun.
You will have a blast making the cookies and eating them but designing and decorating them is such a treat. There are a few things you might need that aren’t on the average baking list. Wilton Meringue Powder, black food coloring, and bright white candy melts are the oddball ingredients here, but they’re simple to order online or pick up at a specialty store.
You’ll also want to have straws on hand to use as your edible chalk molds!
Chalkboard Cookies Ingredients
The ingredients of the cookie itself won’t matter much, though simple sugar cookies work best. For this particular recipe, the icing is what matters most of all. You will need to make royal icing which is made with powdered sugar, water, and a few other ingredients that give it the black color we want.
After that, edible chalk is the next most important. Simple candy melts will help get the job done, and how you make them will turn them into fun, edible treats.

Cut wide straws to desired chalk length.
Squeeze chocolate into the wide straws.
Add a little white sugar to the bottom of a bowl to prevent the chocolate from coming out on the other side of the straw.
Make sure to fill the straw full of chocolate, so you end up with a solid piece of chalk.
Place in the freezer for 10 minutes.
Use a rod knife, sharpening steel, or dowel rod to get the chocolate out of the straw.
