Why You’ll Love This Recipe

What is Puppy Chow?

Our Valentines puppy chow recipe is the only Valentine’s Day treat you will need, complete with M&Ms, candy hearts, and sprinkles. There are plenty of treats we can make from rice cereal.

One of the more common rice cereal treats is rice krispies. The second most popular is puppy chow. Puppy Chow uses rice Chex cereal, peanut butter, chocolate, and powdered sugar to create a delicious snack perfect for falling in love.

Essentially, it changes the cereal pieces into small, crunchy candies, each one packed with a sweet flavor that completely fits into Valentine’s Day. Of course, this recipe started as basically as possible.

You might’ve even encountered a similar recipe on the Chex cereal box. However, this version levels things up slightly. We are ditching the microwave-safe bowl for something a little sophisticated.

Valentines Puppy Chow Recipe Ingredients

  • Creamy Peanut Butter: There aren’t many ingredients here that serve a purpose other than flavor. Creamy is the choice, though. The cereal will add plenty of crunch for us to enjoy.
  • Butter: This is one of the few ingredients that serves a purpose. The butter will help the peanut butter and chocolate melt together. Of course, a bit of richness comes from it as well.
  • Chocolate: Here is the start of the customization options in this Valentines puppy chow recipe. We use dark chocolate in this recipe, but you can use milk chocolate or even white chocolate if you’d prefer.
  • Vanilla Extract: Peanut butter and chocolate go together very well. However, the vanilla here balances out those flavors, so we have an extremely delicious and dangerously addicting treat.
  • Chex Cereal: The star of the show is the cereal. The cereal adds crunch to the treat but also serves as something for the peanut butter mixture to stick to with ease.
  • Powdered Sugar: We aren’t exactly tempering chocolate here, so we need something to keep our fingers a bit cleaner. Powdered sugar is the perfect solution.
  • Candy and Sprinkles: This sweet treat, Valentine’s Day puppy chow, is so easy to make. We can use the spare time we have to mix it with other candies and sprinkles to fit the theme we want.

Themed Snack Recipes

There are different ways to theme puppy chow. The original recipe doesn’t call for candies and sprinkles. We can use that to our advantage. The candy and sprinkles don’t matter to the recipe; you can completely leave them out if you’d like.

However, using different candies or colored sprinkles is how we theme the perfect treat. Valentines Day puppy chow uses pink and white sprinkles. We also use pink and white candies to make it Valentine’s Day-themed.

Change the puppy chow mix to fit other holidays, like red, white, and blue sprinkles and candies for patriotic puppy chow or green and white for St. Patrick’s Day puppy chow.

The sweetly coated cereal will serve as the base of the recipe, and the candies and sprinkles in different colors are entirely up to you. That is partly what makes this a fun puppy chow recipe.

We can make our own different varieties of muddy buddys.

What’s the Difference Between Puppy Chow and Muddy Buddies?

This Valentines puppy chow recipe is a spin-off of the original Chex Mix cereal recipe that was once on the side of cereal boxes. Traditional puppy chow was nothing more than Chex cereal, chocolate, peanut butter, and powdered sugar.

The recipe called for melting the peanut butter and chocolate in a microwave, dumping the perfect combination into a clean, unused garbage bag, and shaking it until the cereal is fully coated.

Then, dump in some powdered sugar and give it another shake. The company behind the cereal started making it and packaging it to sell in stores. Of course, puppy chow sounds like a dog food, so the name was changed to “Muddy Buddies.”

This delicious recipe can be called a muddy buddies recipe, muddy buddys recipe, or a puppy chow recipe.
