Tzatziki sauce is a sauce that originated in the Middle East and was later adapted by the Greeks into the traditional Greek dish known as tzatziki. The sauce is a yogurt sauce made with a combination of Greek or plain yogurt, English cucumber, and fresh dill.

Sounds like a refreshing sauce, but how do you use it? Some people use it as a dip, others use it as a dip for pita bread, cherry tomatoes, or other fresh veggies, or any lean protein like chicken pieces.

In fact, pouring some tzatziki sauce into a warm pita pocket and adding some cubed chicken or even rotisserie chicken makes for a great meal. The taste is tangy, refreshing, and absolutely filling.

What to Fill a Pita Pocket With

This chicken and tzatziki in pita pockets recipe does not specify a couple of things, such as the type of pita to use or the cut of chicken. This is because you can use whichever pita bread you like most.

The chicken is a different story. The only thing to remember here is that the chicken must be boneless and skinless. The actual cut of the chicken can be whichever you prefer.

Chicken breasts are easier to work with, but chicken thighs bring more flavor. We need the chicken to be boneless and skinless to make cutting it to size easier.

You can cube it the way we did in this recipe, or you can make shredded chicken if you’d prefer that. Either way, no bones and no skin.

Chicken Pita Pockets Ingredients

  • Chicken – Chicken is the star of the dish, or maybe it’s the tzatziki sauce, or the pita bread, too many wonderful ingredients to choose a star.
  • Olive Oil – We need olive oil to help cook the juicy chicken. We won’t get the grill marks, but we’d take ease over grill marks any day.
  • Lemon – This great recipe uses a lot of fresh ingredients that come together to create a creamy, refreshing sauce.
  • English Cucumber – What is an English cucumber? Just a cucumber with smaller seeds, sometimes no seeds. We will end up with grated cucumber, so the type is more routine than mandatory.

  • Cherry Tomatoes – This dish is all about freshness from produce. Use fresh cherry tomatoes for bursts of flavor throughout the pita pocket.
  • Iceberg Lettuce – We will need to chop this lettuce. Yes, we can find prechopped lettuce in the store, but why start sacrificing freshness now?
  • Pita Bread – Your favorite pita bread will work perfectly in this chicken and tzatziki in pita pockets recipe. One of the best things about this recipe, besides the fresh vegetables, is the pita, so make it count.
  • Seasonings and Fresh Herbs – This recipe will use a number of seasonings, including paprika, cumin, garlic powder, oregano, and the usual salt and pepper. These ingredients are specifically for the chicken pita pockets. We still need to make the tzatziki sauce.

Homemade Tzatziki Sauce Ingredients

  • Greek Yogurt – We use plain Greek yogurt in this recipe. However, you can use full-fat Greek yogurt or even regular yogurt if you’d like.
  • Lemon – You may have noticed we needed lemon in the chicken and now again in the sauce. Luckily, we only need half a lemon for each, so you will only need one lemon total for that fresh lemon juice.
  • English Cucumber – Unfortunately, we can’t say the same here. We need a whole English cucumber for the chicken, and only half for the sauce. You could use the other half as extra filling in the pita pockets or as a garnish.

  • Fresh Dill – Fresh dill is going to help make this fresh tzatziki sauce taste even better. Try to avoid using dried dill from a seasoning bottle.
  • Garlic – Is there any recipe out there that doesn’t use garlic? You know the drill, we say use 2, but you will probably end up using four cloves of garlic for a full spread.
  • Olive Oil – Olive oil is what helps hold everything together.

How to Store Chicken Pita Pockets

Some may say this chicken and tzatziki in pita pockets recipe is Mediterranean food; others will argue its origins. Either way, it is a great option for delivering savory flavor in a portable, edible container.

It is our favorite way to have a complete meal ready for travel. This is because we can make the chicken ahead of time, or even use leftover chicken. Then, we can build the pockets when we’re ready to eat.

Store the chicken, sauce, and toppings in a separate airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days, in the freezer for 4 months. Enjoy a delicious meal whenever you’d like with this meal prep option.
