The La Habra Children’s Museum

This is a small but excellent museum to explore with your young ones. They have plenty of dress up and make-believe exhibits. They rotate themes regularly and their dress-up area is always a big hit as well.

The Santa Ana Zoo at Prentice Park

This zoo is focused on primates, over 50 at any given time. It’s not one of the biggest zoos around but is easily accessible and good for a morning or afternoon visit. They are hosting a couple concerts in July as well.

Whale Watching

I was able to attend field trip with my son for whale watching. The boat ride was a great experience. The large vessel gives a smooth ride, leaving no one aboard with motion sickness. You’re not guaranteed to see whales, but dolphin pods up close are equally exciting.

Hit the Beach

There are endless options for all families here. Huntington is great for surfing and grabbing a bite on the pier. Corona Del Mar offers great rocky cliffs. Crystal Cove is another great option. For daytime fun or nighttime weenie roasts, the beach is can’t-miss fun.

VBS

Vacation Bible School is a week-long program held at many churches throughout Orange County. Each church has a different theme that is carried out through crafts, skits, role-playing, and music. My kids look forward to attending every summer. They always have a memorable time.

Discovery Science Center

Kids love science and exploration. The Cube is a great place to expose your children to both. Themes vary, so check the link to see what’s the latest and greatest on display. There’s a Mythbusters exhibit running all summer long.

Tanaka Farms

Having trouble introducing your kids to fruits and vegetables? Then this is the place for you. They offer tractor rides through the farm where you’ll be introduced to the crops they grow and eat samples along the way. They are an organic farm so it’s safe to eat with a little rinse of water.

Color Me Mine

Art is another great outlet for your family. You could easily spend a few hours painting ceramics at Color Me Mine. It’s a pleasant break from the electronics(TV, tablets, phones) and leaves you with lots of time for conversation. Stick to smaller items and encourage attention to detail.

Pretend City Children’s Museum

This oneof the many things to do in Orange County is aimed more at families with preschool to toddler children. It is very well laid out and loaded with props and scenarios. The grocery store was a hit with my son. The library was also a nice place to pretend you were the librarian, checking out books to patrons.

Regal Summer Movies

At just $1 a ticket, this is a deal to be had. Every Tuesday and Wednesday at 10 am, participating Regal Theaters show family-friendly films. They’re not the latest releases, but going to the movie theater is still a treat.

Disneyland

Family memories are made here. Disney California Adventure has been upgraded nicely, providing more value than ever. Go Bowling

Kids love bowling and most of the local bowling alleys have great summertime deals. The La Habra 300 Bowl has $1 games on Thursday afternoon along with many other deals throughout the week. The whole family can have a great time bonding over a game most of us aren’t very good at.

Knott’s Berry Farm

If roller coasters are more your speed, there are plenty of things to do in Orange County for you. Camp Snoopy has been recently renovated as well, with three new rides added. Mrs. Knott’s fried chicken is always delicious a great way to stay fueled during the day. Soak City, the Knott’s Berry Farm water park, is an excellent place to beat the heat this summer too.

Irvine Park Railroad

How about a train ride in the park? That’s just the beginning here. Pony Rides are also quite popular. There’s plenty to do here, so make a day of it in the park located in the foothills of Orange.

ZOOMARS Petting Zoo

Have a day in San Juan Capistrano! Zoomars is located within walking distance of the train station and the San Juan Capistrano Mission. Feed the guinea pigs, rabbits, llamas, and ze-donks. That’s right, ze-donks, zebra-donkey hybrids that look like donkeys with stripes.

Go Fish

Irvine Lake is loaded with big fish and big fun. My kids are hooked on fishing after discovering it last summer. No fishing license required here and kids fish for 5 bucks all July long. So give fishing a try and see if you get hooked too!

2014 OC FAIR | July 11 – Aug 10 | Costa Mesa, CA

My kids always enjoy a trip to the fair. From piglet races to rides and exhibits, the fair has it all. You can even save a few dollars on interest by donating school supplies or books on certain days. This is a piece of Americana that all kids should experience.
