Cooking Tips

Save those bones throuhout the week! Most people throw out the bones when they have finished eating; there’s nothing wrong with that. It’s fair to say it is a bit wasteful, but not bad. We can’t eat the bones exactly, but there is something inside the bones we can eat: bone marrow.

Bone marrow is fatty tissue inside the bone. This marrow is filled with flavor and nutrition. In fact, pretty much every chicken soup recipe uses bone broth or chicken broth as the base for that very reason.

This allows us to be more efficient with the food we cook and eat at home. Now, we don’t have to throw away those bones when we finish eating. Instead, we can use them to make our own chicken bone broth at home.

Homemade chicken bone broth is very easy to make and this recipe can be made with an instant pot or crock pot so it’s easy to adapt to your preference.

The crock pot is similar in that we don’t have to do much to get great results. We can go out and buy our rotisserie chickens, eat the meat, and then toss the bones in an Instant Pot with some vegetable scraps to make our own broth.

Store the homemade bone broth for later use as a delicious soup or as an ingredient in pasta or rice dishes. The homemade chicken broth will not only save us some money, but it will also help our immune system, gut health, and so much more.

Homemade Chicken Bone Broth Ingredients

  • Water: Homemade broth is going to start with water. The cooking process will transform the water into a healthy chicken bone broth recipe filled with all of the essential nutrients.
  • Chicken Bones: We can use any combination of chicken bones from meals we’ve had this week or the meal we had last night. The best place to start is with bones that you picked clean during a delicious meal. Of course, you could also go to your local butcher and pay for some bones specifically for this delicious broth.

  • Celery: Celery adds a fresh subtle taste to any soup, especially this bone broth.
  • Onions: Many of us love the flavor that onions add to a dish. If you have an onion sensitivity, don’t worry! You can omit them from this recipe and it will still be filled with flavor.
  • Garlic: The benefits of garlic are too long to list – some of my favorites are it boosts your immune system and regulates blood sugar.
  • Carrots: Carrots are a staple for any soup or broth!
  • Mushrooms: Mushrooms are loaded with vitamin D and a great way to add in some bone health nutritional support.
  • Ginger: I am honestly not a big fan of the taste of ginger but a little goes a long way for health benefits. I personally use less than called for in this recipe.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar: We will add 3 Tbsp of apple cider vinegar to this recipe.
  • Salt: You can add salt to this recipe to taste.
  • Peppercorns: Peppercorns add the right amount of spice!
  • Bay Leaf: A bay leaf adds a lot of flavor and helps all of these ingredients come together to make the best chicken stock recipe.

Now, we just need to decide whether we want to make a slow cooker recipe or an Instant Pot recipe.
