An easy, healthy mushroom pizza recipe is not just about adding mushrooms to a pizza; it’s about making it out of a mushroom. There are a few staples that come together to make a classic pizza.

We have tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, homemade pizza dough, some fresh herbs, and a combination of pizza toppings we love. However, every aspect of a pizza is customizable.

We don’t have to use a tomato-based pizza sauce; we could have a white pizza sauce instead. The mozzarella cheese doesn’t have to be mozzarella; it could be parmesan cheese or any kind of cheese.

Then there are the toppings. A good pizza will have Italian seasoning as the first topping. It will add flavor and freshness to each bite. The rest of the toppings can include produce or meat.

Fruit is a hot-button subject for some, but even it has a place on top of pizza. One of the most common toppings on a pizza is mushroom. Raw mushrooms, white mushrooms, oyster mushrooms, cremini mushrooms, and mushroom lovers will put any kind of mushrooms on the pizza.

But we can turn fresh mushrooms into a much more important aspect of the pizza: the base. Pizza dough is delicious; it’s just not exactly healthy. Pizza dough is commonly made with refined wheat flour.

Wheat flour is high in carbs, fats, and sodium. One slice of pizza may put you over your daily values for carbs, fats, or sodium. The real kicker is that the dough doesn’t have much protein at all.

We cover a slice of fat in sauce and cheese and enjoy every pizza night. Of course, that could be what makes it so delicious. We can top the pizza with fresh thyme, a mushroom mixture, and fresh mozzarella, but it is still wheat flour.

Luckily, every aspect of a pizza is customizable, even the dough. We could simply change the flour we use to make the dough to something like whole wheat.

Unfortunately, whole wheat isn’t much better, especially if we’re counting calories. That is where the portobello mushroom completes the whole thing. We can cook a portobello mushroom in a pizza oven just like we would dough.

Though, you don’t need a pizza oven to make this recipe work. Instead, you just need the desire to have something different, something healthier, an easy, healthy mushroom pizza recipe.
