The fall soil will be chilly, which will help the carrots mature. You can even store homegrown carrots in the fridge for up to 3 months before they start going bad.
Brussels sprouts might be the quintessential fall garden vegetable. These sprouts will thrive in fall and may even be the last plant you have thriving as we enter winter. The trick to growing Brussels sprouts is to harvest from the bottom up. These sprouts will continue to grow from the top of the plant even as you harvest the bottom.
One important aspect of planting a garden is to use plants to help grow other plants. Marigolds will help keep cabbage moths and aphids away from your Brussels sprouts. It is important to use things like marigolds or even nasturtiums to help naturally protect your garden.
The last thing you want to do is use pesticides that could contaminate your veggies. There are safe pesticide options out there, but they often come at a higher price.
Potatoes are nightshade veggies. This means that they can produce toxins that get into the soil and could make it challenging to grow in that area again. It is essential to keep that in mind when planting because you do not want to overload your soil with those toxins.
Do not plant potatoes in the same soil that you had bell peppers, tomatoes, or eggplants growing in the season prior. This will help keep your soil rich and your veggies delicious.
Cauliflower is one of the best fall garden vegetables. The chilly soil helps the cauliflower to grow tight and tender heads which will be filled with nutrients. Plant your cauliflower mid-summer indoors and then move outside in late summer. You will have a full crop of delicious cauliflower that can be used in many great low-carb recipes.
You may have found that radishes are on the list of seasonal veggies for multiple seasons. However, gardeners have found that radishes grown in the fall have the most flavor. You can bet that the more flavor a veggie has more nutrients it has as well. Radishes grow fast, so plant early, and you may be able to get a few different rounds out of them before winter arrives.
Spinach is another fast grower, like radishes. You will get great results from your seeds if you plant early, harvest as soon as possible, and replant more. If done correctly, you can get a new batch of spinach every two weeks. Spinach is a robust plant that can handle light frost very well. However, you will get better germination rates if you start planting in mid to late summer.
