Easy Cheesesteak Sandwich Recipe
Make this easy cheesesteak sandwich recipe at home to add as many bell peppers and onions as your heart desires. Making a truly Philly cheesesteak is not very difficult. Need proof?
There are dozens and dozens of restaurants in Philadelphia that sell the sandwich, meaning a true Philly cheesesteak can be made in many different places.

The Philly area alone has maybe even hundreds of options, and then there are options all around the world. All of this is to say that the sandwich is easy to make and can be made anywhere, even at home.
We can make the beef filling using a meat of our choice, prep the cheeses, slice a green bell pepper, make some caramelized onions, and let everyone who is eating build their own sandwich to their liking.
Of course, a recipe this easy gives us a lot of room to customize the ingredients.

What is the Secret to a Good Philly Cheesesteak
This sandwich is not quite a Philly cheesesteak, but only in appearance; the flavors are all there. Some people may say the secret to a good cheesesteak sandwich is the soft roll bread, others think the melted cheese is the secret.
Of course, the obvious answer would be the type of meat you use. Still, the only thing that makes a cheesesteak sandwich a great recipe is everything combined.

You can choose the ingredients to be the highest quality, most expensive ingredients and still would prefer the cheaper option from the hole-in-the-wall in South Philly.
A good Philly cheesesteak sandwich is all about personal preference, which is another reason making them at home is a better idea. We can play around with the ingredients more freely to figure out which we prefer.

Cheesesteak Sandwich Ingredients
- Bread: Philly cheesesteak sandwiches use a toasted hoagie roll. However, this is not a traditional Philly cheesesteak but an easy cheesesteak sandwich recipe. Use amoroso rolls or any toasted buns. We went completely off-book and used San Luis sourdough bread.
- Steak: You can’t have a classic Philly cheesesteak or something close to it without shaved steak. We use skirt steak. However, you can use sirloin steak, rib eye, round steak, or your favorite cut of beef so long as you can get thin slices of it.

- Bell Peppers: The classic bell pepper for an authentic Philly cheesesteak is green. Green bell peppers aren’t the only way. Add whichever type you like, or make a mixture for something all your own.
- Onion: Not everyone is a fan of grilled onions, but boy, are they good on this sandwich. Sauteed onions don’t have to be added, which is another benefit of making this recipe at home.

- Mushrooms: A good idea would be to add some mushrooms with the sliced onions over low heat to add some more flavor to the sandwich filled with sliced steak.
- Cheese: Here is where the magic happens. The cheese mixture is most commonly cheez whiz with provolone and American cheese. We used exclusively white American cheese, feel free to go with whatever melty cheese you enjoy most.

How to Make a Cheesesteak Sandwich
- Prepare and cut vegetables.
- Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a 10” to 12” skillet to medium heat.
- Add onion and green bell pepper and cook until they begin to soften, then add the mushrooms.
- Season with salt and pepper and allow them to caramelize while continuing to stir.
- Once they are cooked, remove from the pan and set aside. Do not clean the pan so you can keep the seasoning.
- Heat 1 tablespoon of oil to the same pan to medium high heat. Add thinly sliced steak to the pan, season with salt & pepper, and let sit for about 4 to 5 minutes before stirring so the meat can brown.
- After 4 to 5 minutes, stir and cook until fully cooked, for about 1 to 2 more minutes.
- Once the meat is cooked, drain grease from the pan into a strainer and then return the meat, onions, bell pepper, and mushrooms back to the pan and stir to mix.
- Heat up the panini press.
- Butter the outside of the San Luis Sourdough bread and lay the butter side down on the panini press.
- Add meat mixture and 2 slices of white American cheese over the top of the meat.
- Add the 2nd slice of sourdough bread to the top of the cheese with the butter side facing out and close press gently so the sandwich presses together.
- Cook for a few minutes until the cheese is soft and the bread is a crispy golden brown color.
- Remove from the press and enjoy!
