We use Yukon Gold potatoes, which are the most commonly used for velvety potatoes. Yukon Gold potatoes are sort of a catch-all for potato recipes. However, that isn’t to say you have to stick with Yukon Gold to mash potatoes with that potato masher.

Starchy potatoes can be used to make fluffier mashed potatoes. Russet potatoes and Idaho potatoes are the best kinds of potatoes for fluffy results. This means Yukon Gold, Russet, and Idaho potatoes are the best potatoes for mashing.
You will want to avoid red potatoes or waxy potatoes like New potatoes. These will lead to chunkier mashed potatoes with an entirely lumpy texture.

15 Minute Instant Pot Mashed Potatoes Ingredients
- Yukon Gold Potatoes – We already know why we went with Yukon Gold potatoes. We like our mashed potatoes to be creamy. You can also use Russet or Idaho potatoes for a fluffier texture instead.
- Chicken Stock – Most easy Instant Pot mashed potatoes recipes will call for water. However, we’ll be using chicken stock instead of water in this 15 minute Instant Pot mashed potatoes recipe. It adds more flavor to the end results. You can use all chicken broth, a chicken broth and water mixture, or just water.
- Heavy Cream – We use heavy cream because we went with a creamy base ingredient, Yukon Gold potatoes. We need to use some sort of dairy to get the right texture; the type of dairy product you use will ultimately change the texture of the potatoes.
- Salt – To taste. 😉
