What is the Difference Between Crumble and Crisp?

Multiple baked goods utilize large apples as a filling. Two of those desserts are apple crisp and apple crumble. They may look similar by all appearances, so what is the difference?

Well, fun fact, they use the terms interchangeably in the UK and Australia. Order an apple crumble or an apple crisp in the UK, and you will get the same dish either way.

Here, in the US and in Canada there is a difference between the two desserts. The difference is the oat topping. Apple crisp uses oats or instant oats to get a golden brown and crispy top layer.

The crisp filling is essentially the same as in a crumble. Cinnamon apples are used to fill both desserts. This means the difference is literally in the name. An apple crisp has a crisp top layer, and a crumble does not.

Instead, a crumble has a softened top layer made from butter, flour, and sugar. Both fruit crisps and crumbles can swap the fruit out for any baking fruit you’d like.

This crisp is made using Coaches Instant Oats to get that crisp top layer. However, apples are far superior, so long as we pick the right apples.

Homemade Apple Crisp Ingredients

  • Apples: We already know how to pick out the apples we want to use for this sweet treat. The best results come from tart apples. We just need to pick out the ones we like.
  • Instant Oats: The oats will be going on top of the apple mixture to give our taste buds a crisp taste. It is a simple topping, but it has become a personal favorite of many people across the country. The tasty dessert will speak for itself.
  • Brown Sugar: We can’t enjoy tart apples in the perfect fall treat without a bit of sweetness. A little brown sugar will go a long way here. However, we have to decide between dark brown sugar and light brown sugar.
  • Cinnamon: You can’t have a classic fall dessert without cinnamon. Of course, any cinnamon will do here, though you will definitely get bonus points for using fresh cinnamon.
  • Nutmeg: Nutmeg is another classic seasoning needed to make fall desserts. In fact, those pumpkin spice drinks utilize nutmeg as well as cinnamon.
  • Flour: All-purpose flour is perfect for getting that crisp oat mixture to bake perfectly golden brown.
  • Butter: This ingredient is in pretty much every baked good out there. However, it is important to note we will be using softened butter. Cold butter will make the crunchy oat topping denser.
