The Amazon Echo Show 2nd Generation is out and that means more than you may think. While technology moves fast in general, the differences between a 1st gen and 2nd gen product are usually the most noticeable. But what makes the Echo Show 2nd generation better than the first?
The Amazon Echo Show 2nd Generation brings several improvements that were requested by early adopters of the first generation, making it a great addition to your home and the perfect gift for tech lovers.
When the Echo Show first came out many people were immediately on board with the idea of having video calls, entertainment and more added to a smart speaker.
While the original Echo Show did such an amazing job, the Amazon Echo Show 2nd Generation takes any criticism from the first generation and fixes them. This practice is common with technology which is why some people prefer to wait for the 2nd generation of any product.
Anything, no matter the size or impact of the improvement can be made. The question is, what improvements were made to the Amazon Echo Show 2nd Generation and which were saved for later?
The Amazon Echo Show 1st Gen
The Amazon Echo Show first came out in 2017. The square shape measured in at 187mm x 187mm x 90mm. On the front of the original, you’d find half of the space is taken up by the display and the other half is the speaker.
The speaker panel is made up of two, 2-inch speakers sitting next to each other. Smooth plastic makes up most of the materials on the first gen which was appreciated for some reasons and disliked for others. The smooth plastic made it easy to clean but it feels like you have a small tv on a nightstand or shelf instead of a home accessory.
However, there were many things to like about the original. Adding visuals to your smart home speaker is what the Echo Show did and now many other manufacturers are following suit. These visuals made it so that you wouldn’t even have to ask for some information, instead, things would just be displayed like the time, weather, calendar events and more.
Amazon Echo Show 2nd Generation | Display Size
One thing many users of the original Echo Show can agree on is the need for a bigger display. Most often, the Echo Show would be across the room, making it harder to see clearly.
Even if you walked right past the Echo Show, getting a passing glance may have required a short pause to make sure you read it clearly. The 2nd Gen Show doesn’t have the speakers on the front which gives more room for a bigger display.
Amazon Echo Show 2nd Generation | Display Quality
The display is the main point of the Echo Show and thus, a priority for any improvements. The display on the Echo Show 2nd Generation now officially has the title of “HD” according to Amazon. However, the difference in daily use isn’t very noticeable since, even with the larger display size, the screen is still relatively small.
Amazon Echo Show 2nd Generation | Materials
The 2nd gen version removes as much of the plastic as possible, making it look like a tablet sitting on a table instead of a small television. On the rest of the Echo Show 2nd Gen is a fabric that covers the speakers giving it a more home-friendly feel.

Now that the speakers have been removed from the front, the placement seems to be everything. There are still two 2-inch speakers, but they are placed in a way that allows the sound to project better. There is also the added passive bass radiator and Dolby processing which makes for better sound.
Now, it’s easier to actually enjoy the music you listen to from your Amazon playlist or YouTube. It also makes watching videos from Hulu, Amazon Prime, or YouTube even better.
Amazon Echo Show 2nd Generation | Pricing
Getting either the Echo Show 2017 or 2018 is still very easy as sales are handled through Amazon, mostly. The 2018 version is available for $230 which is the starting price for the original as well. However, the original is now discounted and continues to go on sale regularly.
Amazon Echo Show 2nd Generation | Review
The improvements are ones that were actually needed. The bigger display may not be easily noticed but it can be noticeable when you’re watching videos. But an even more noticeable upgrade is the one to the speakers.
The Echo Show started out as a speaker with a display on it, but often times it felt more like a display with a speaker tacked on to it. Now, we finally have a smart speaker with a display, cohesively and elegantly integrated with each other.
The use of fabric and the color options also makes it easier to place in any room without feeling like it takes away from the decor. It’s now a smart home assistant you will actually want to look at in your home.
