During the World Special Olympics in Long Beach last weekend we were able to experience the “Fans in the Stands” event first hand as part of the 2015 Verizon FiOS SoCal Experience. The “Fans in The Stands” is where everyone can get involved and cheer on the athletes during the World Special Olympics. The athletes come from all around the world, and so do the fans with the goals of having fun and inspiring others.
Fans in the stands was a great day at the World Special Olympics.
Verizon FiOS sponsored Katherine Campos, an inspiring beach volleyball athlete from Costa Rica. We were able to watch as Campos and her team dominated the beach and won almost every match they had that day. Though that was just the beginning of the truly inspirational day we had at hand.
Immediately after, Katherine came up to us with a huge smile on her face and very willing to take pictures with everyone. While we were excited to meet Katherine, she was just as excited. Picture after picture and pose after pose, Katherine was truly the celebrity of the day. At one point, a volunteer at the World Special Olympics came up and asked her if she was alright with all of the excitement. I will never forget the biggest smile Katherine had when she said she was great.
Katherine Campos was a true athlete, no matter what others may think slows her down, she overcomes and defeats them all. Though Katherine was not the only one. The beach was filled with athletes and fans, and the games were like any other summer Olympic games. Scanning the area, you’d see shirts of different colors, brightening and adding color to the already sunny day. Each color represented a different fan group and athlete. We wore red and white as part of the Verizon team.
Verizon FiOS has been very busy all year long and visiting the World Special Olympics and sponsoring Katherine Campos was just one of the many things on their calendar. Verizon FiOS offers great speed and cable services for southern California, but beyond that they’re another part of the community. Some of you may know them personally, we know them as the Verizon FiOS Experience Team. The Verizon FiOS Experience team has already taken part in the K9 Summer Fest in Santa Monica, donated $5,000 to Habitat for Humanity Inland Valley and volunteered with more than 300 volunteers for the Menifee Better Together neighborhood revitalization project all in 2015. In total since 2013, when the Verizon FiOS Experience was started, they have volunteered over 1300 hours in So Cal and donated over $122,500 in grants and they show no sign of slowing down.
While we were invited to cheer on the athletes at the World Special Olympics, we want to take this opportunity to cheer on the Verizon FiOS Experience Team. While spending the day with the team in Long Beach we met many Verizon employees and their friends. What was impressive was this wasn’t their first time volunteering. The team has spent many days together, volunteering all around Southern California and even going to the Grand Prix.
